Comment: The gouge in the “W” of the word WE in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST (described in the chapter for 1961) will be present on issues from each mint as well as on proof coins. It does not appear to be present on every coin.

Comment: A new "D" mintmark style appears during 1962. It is not clear at this time whether this new “style” was the result of damage and repair to the bottom left corner of an existing mintmark punch or was a new item altogether. This punch was probably used late in the year and is found on a minority of coins examined. The use of this new style continues into successive years.
