Comment:  For date and mint collectors, 1949 is a key year.  The comparatively lower mintage figures support somewhat higher prices for these coins, in particular the 1949-S.  During the late 1970's, the cost of a single BU 1949-S was higher than the entire 1946-1964-D set would cost in the mid-1990's.  Even though mintage figures are relatively low for all three mints, the 1949 and 1949-D probably did not get as much attention from collectors at that time as the lower mintage 1949-S. For this reason, uncirculated examples of 1949 and 1949-D coins are fairly scarce and may be considered semi-key in the series.
